About Us

Since 1954, Canterbury School has been dedicated to providing a superior, nurturing education for young children. An independent, non-profit private school, located in the Morningside-Emory area of Atlanta, Canterbury School offers a range of programs for infants through third-graders.

Canterbury School provides challenging academics combined with a deep sense of community and a caring atmosphere for children. Children are respected as unique individuals, and they develop a sense of respect for others and an appreciation for diversity.

At Canterbury School, children experience optimum social, emotional, physical, and intellectual growth through a stimulating environment, dedicated teachers, and an enriching curriculum.

Our Mission

Canterbury School is dedicated to providing a superior quality early childhood education to our young children. Canterbury’s emphasis is on providing small class sizes, intellectual stimulation coordinated with children’s play, child-centered activities based on experimentation with materials of the child’s own choosing, and a nurturing environment that promotes self-confidence, respect for self and others, and life-long learning.

Canterbury encourages the enrollment of multicultural families from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, creed, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, or family structure.

Philosphy

At the core of our philosophy, we believe that children should enjoy their childhood and early learning experiences. Every day at Canterbury School brings new enriching learning experiences. The early childhood years are essential for building a solid foundation for social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development. Part of that foundation should be a life-long love of learning that children will embrace throughout their lives.

Early childhood is a meaningful phase of life that should be valued and respected. At Canterbury School, we view children as naturally curious, creative, and competent individuals, who have a hand in the direction of their own learning. As a result, we use a mixture of both child-directed and teacher-directed learning activities. We believe that a child’s work is play. A highly qualified teacher is present to guide and support learning. As a result, we use a mixture of both child-directed and teacher-directed learning activities. A highly qualified teacher must be there to support their learning by being a keen observer, arranging a stimulating environment, and providing hands-on, developmentally appropriate activities and materials.

Since each child has individual differences and develops at his/her own pace, we strive to meet each child at their own developmental level. We challenge each child to meet his/her full potential by providing small class sizes, an adaptable environment, and flexible curriculum.
